Also called

People call these many names — plain color wallpaper, solid color background, plain background, solid wallpaper. They all mean the same thing here.

How this site is arranged

There are two steps, and color comes first. Each color has a page of its own listing every resolution available in it, with the exact values of that color and what it is good for. From there, each resolution has its own page carrying the plain color wallpaper itself, its dimensions and file size, and a note on how it behaves if your screen is a different shape. If you already know both answers, the color pages are the short route to the file.

Only what has actually been made is listed. Colours and sizes are added over time, and until a page exists it does not appear anywhere on the site — no empty entries, no links that go nowhere. If a color you want is missing, it has not been made yet rather than hidden behind something.

What free means here

There is no account to make, no email to hand over and no download that turns out to be a preview. The file linked from a page is the file you get: full resolution, no watermark, nothing to crop off a corner afterwards.

There is nothing watching you take it, either: no account, no ad code, and nothing that follows you on to the next site. One analytics tool, described on the privacy page, sets a cookie; nothing else here does. The License page is short for the same reason: there is very little to describe.

The license has no catch either. Every plain color wallpaper on this site is released into the public domain under CC0, which covers commercial work as squarely as it covers a desktop background — no attribution, no link back, no separate license to buy for a client project. A flat color has no creative expression in it to own in the first place, and the License page says so in full.

What a plain color wallpaper is actually for

A desktop is the obvious use for a plain color wallpaper, and the reason is contrast rather than taste: with nothing behind them, icon labels and window edges stay readable wherever they land. The same logic carries into video calls and streams, where software has to cut an outline around you and a background with no detail in it gives the edge detection nothing to argue with.

Past that, plain color wallpapers turn up wherever something else needs to be the subject. Thumbnails and slides use them so text sits at full contrast. Designers and photographers use them as a known value to build on or shoot against, which only works if the color really is the value it claims. And a full-screen flat color is the standard way to inspect a display, since a panel's faults have nowhere to hide on it — each color page covers what its own color reveals.
