1080x1920 on a phone that is taller than 1080x1920
Very few current phones are exactly 1080x1920. That size is 9:16, while most recent phones are taller and narrower, around 19.5:9 or 20:9: 1080x2340 and 1080x2400 are common on Android, and an iPhone 15 Pro is 1179x2556. To fill one of those screens, the phone enlarges the image until it covers the height, and the extra width runs off the sides.
With a photograph, that crop decides what you lose. With a plain white wallpaper there is nothing to lose: every pixel is the same, so the part that ends up off screen looks exactly like the part that stays. The parallax and zoom effects some phones apply to the lock screen are harmless for the same reason, and the image never looks soft after enlarging, because a flat color has no detail to blur.
A 1080x1920 canvas for Stories, Reels and Shorts
1080x1920 is also the upload size that Instagram Stories and Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts recommend, which makes a plain white wallpaper at this size a ready-made canvas for vertical posts. Put text on it for an announcement, drop a screenshot onto it with some room around the edges, or place a logo in the middle for a simple title card.
Keep the important parts away from the top and bottom of the frame. Each app draws its own name, captions and buttons over those areas, and the exact space differs between apps and changes with their updates, so the middle of the frame is the only part you can count on staying clear. A plain white wallpaper also shows the compression artifacts the apps add around text more readily than a busy image would, so larger, bolder type survives the upload better than fine print.
A plain white wallpaper when your phone goes dark
Dark mode leaves the wallpaper alone, so the job is to bring a plain white wallpaper down with everything else. Both major platforms can do that for you. iPhones have a Dark Appearance Dims Wallpaper switch in the wallpaper settings, and Samsung phones can apply dark mode to the wallpaper as well; either one tones the white down to a soft gray while dark mode is on and restores it in the morning.
If your phone has neither, there are two other routes. A Focus or bedtime mode that changes the lock screen lets you keep the plain white wallpaper for the day and pair it with a darker one for the night. On an iPhone, a Shortcuts automation can also switch wallpapers at sunset and switch back at sunrise, which does the same thing without tying it to a Focus.
Questions
Why does a plain color not go blurry when my phone enlarges it?
Enlarging an image means inventing new pixels between the ones that exist. In a photo those in-between values soften the detail; in a flat color every neighbor is the same #FFFFFF, so every invented pixel is #FFFFFF too.
Can I use it on a tablet?
Yes. A tablet is a much squarer shape, so it crops far more of a tall image than a phone does, but with one flat color that crop still cannot be seen.
Why can't I turn on the depth effect with it?
The iPhone depth effect lifts a subject in front of the clock, and a flat white image has no subject to lift. iOS leaves the option off and simply draws the clock over the white.
How do I set it as my phone wallpaper?
Download it to your phone first.
- iPhone: Open the image in Photos, tap Share, then Use as Wallpaper, and choose the lock screen, the home screen or both.
- Android: Open it in your gallery app and choose Set as wallpaper from the menu; the exact wording varies by manufacturer.
Is it really free?
Yes: no sign-up, no watermark, and the file is CC0, so it is yours to use however you like.
