Solid Black Background 1920x1080

The PNG on this page is the same file as the plain black background at 1920x1080: #000000 in all 2,073,600 pixels, saved losslessly. What changes is the job. That page treats it as something to look at on a screen; this one treats a solid black background as a working value for masks, design files and projector output.

When a color value is enough, and when you need the file

If the black is going behind a web page or into a shape you can style, you do not need a download at all: background-color: #000 does the job with no request and no file to host. Most design tools are the same, since any frame or rectangle can take a fill. Reach for a solid black background as an image when the place you are putting it only accepts images.

That covers more places than you might expect: wallpaper and lock screen settings, a CMS field that wants a featured image, a social post that needs something to upload, an editing app that only imports media, a website builder that asks for a section background. In each of those a 1920x1080 solid black background is the thing the field is asking for, and a flat #000000 file is the closest you can get to typing a color into a box that only takes pictures.

Black as the value that hides everything

In masks and mattes, black means hidden. A Photoshop layer mask filled with black conceals its whole layer, and painting white back in reveals only what you paint; a luma track matte in a video editor works the same way, showing the clip only where the matte is bright. A matte in this sense is never seen itself; it only decides which parts of another layer show, which is a different job from a black frame placed behind footage to fill out the picture. A solid black background at the project's own size is therefore the natural starting point for any mask you intend to build up by hand.

Starting from exact zero matters more than it sounds. A mask that is only nearly black lets a few percent of the layer through everywhere, which turns up as a faint ghost of the hidden image once it sits over something else. At 1920x1080 this solid black background is already the size of a Full HD canvas or sequence, so the matte lines up with the frame edges without being scaled.

Sending black to a 1920x1080 projector

Plenty of projectors are native 1080p, and on a projector black is less a color than the absence of output: as close to off as the lamp and panel allow. That makes a full-screen solid black background the standard way to blank a projector without switching it off, and without the blue or branded 'no signal' screen many models show when their input disappears.

Projection mapping relies on the same property. Anything outside the object being projected onto is filled with black so that no light spills onto the wall behind it, and the black areas of a mapped scene are, in practice, the parts the projector leaves unlit. No projector reaches true black, since some light always leaks through the optics and the room sets its own floor, but a solid black background at #000000 asks for the least light the hardware can give.

Questions

Does showing black save a projector's lamp?

Not reliably. Many projectors run the lamp at a fixed power whatever the picture, so black only keeps the light off the screen. Some models dim the lamp or laser on dark content, but the projector's own blank, A/V mute or eco mode is the dependable way to save it.

Is a luma matte the same as an alpha matte?

No. A luma matte reads brightness, so black hides and white shows; an alpha matte reads the transparency channel and ignores color. This PNG has no transparency, so it works as a luma matte.

What do the grays in a mask do?

They let the layer through in part: a 50 percent gray shows it at about half strength. Painting grays onto a black mask is how soft edges and gradual fades are made.
